Happy Halloween!
This past week, I attended the first EMS Explorer Meeting for this year. I was a part of the program last year, but the last few meetings were cancelled due to the pandemic. Here, I learn about EMS topics using interactive classroom and hands on practical training using equipment’s that is used to train Emergency Medical Technicians and Paramedics. For example, last year, I learned about the history of the EMT profession, body substance isolation, and taking vitals.
I am grateful that the program is able to continue – with the addition of social distancing and mask wearing, of course. As a second year explorer, I will be able to work in and around ambulance stations at the direction of my shift supervisor.
At this meeting, we got to hear about what the changes to the program made to accommodate protocols for controlling the pandemic, plans for the upcoming year, and saw what paramedic students do when they first see a patient. As someone who wants to go into the healthcare field, the EMS program will allow me to understand the role emergency services play in the role of patients.
The COVID-19 pandemic has allowed us to gain more respect to our first responders, so it was all the more reason for me to learn what our first responders do on a daily basis!
Thanks for reading! See you next month!
